Beginners often ask how often they should practise guitar. The honest answer is that shorter, regular practice usually beats occasional long sessions.
You do not need to play for two hours a day to improve. In fact, very long sessions can be frustrating when your fingers are still getting used to the instrument.
A realistic routine is one you can actually keep.
For most beginners, 10 to 20 minutes on most days is enough to build momentum.
That might not sound like much, but repeated contact with the guitar helps your fingers remember where to go. Chord changes, strumming and picking all improve through regular repetition.
If you can only manage five minutes on a busy day, still pick the guitar up. It keeps the habit alive.
Start with one or two specific things rather than trying to cover everything.
You might spend a few minutes on chord changes, a few minutes on strumming, then finish with a song or riff you enjoy.
If you are not sure what to practise, my article on what to practise between guitar lessons gives a simple way to organise the week.
Guitar is physical. Your hands, timing and ears need repeated reminders.
Practising once a week for an hour can feel as if you are starting again each time. Practising for a little while most days makes the instrument feel more familiar.
The goal is not perfection every day. The goal is contact.
There is a point where more practice stops helping. If your fingers are sore, your rhythm is falling apart, or you are getting annoyed, take a break.
Beginners sometimes grind away at the same mistake for too long. Slow it down, simplify it, or leave it until tomorrow.
Good practice should be focused, not punishing.
Aim for regular, manageable sessions. Ten good minutes will do more for you than an occasional marathon you dread.
