Private lessons and group classes can both help you learn guitar. The better choice depends on your confidence, budget, goals and how much individual feedback you need.
For some beginners, the social side of a group is motivating. For others, a room full of people makes it harder to ask questions or admit that something is not working.
There is no single right answer, but there are clear differences.
Private lessons move at your pace. If a chord change takes longer than expected, the lesson can slow down. If you pick something up quickly, you can move on without waiting for the rest of a group.
They are also better for spotting small technical problems. A teacher can look at your hand position, timing, strumming and muting in detail.
This is useful for adult beginners, nervous learners, and anyone who wants a clear route rather than a general class plan.
Group classes can be cheaper and sociable. Some learners enjoy seeing other people working through the same struggles.
They can also be a gentle introduction if the class is well run and genuinely beginner friendly.
The drawback is that the teacher has to divide attention. If you need repeated help with a specific problem, you may not get enough time on it.
Children vary a lot. Some enjoy learning with others, while some need the quieter focus of one-to-one tuition.
A child who is shy, easily distracted or frustrated by comparison may do better privately. A confident child who enjoys group activities may like a class.
The teacher's patience and structure matter more than the format on its own.
If your goal is to strum a few songs, enjoy a weekly class and keep costs lower, group learning may suit you.
If you want detailed feedback, flexible song choices, help with technique or support around confidence, private lessons are usually the stronger option.
You can also mix the two. Some learners take private lessons for the foundations, then join groups or jams later.
Choose the setting where you are most likely to practise, ask questions and keep going.
